Amazon raises affiliate commission rates

Amazon has announced that it is increasing commissions on a small group of product categories for a limited time. The new higher payment rates come two years after Amazon cut fees during the Covid pandemic as consumers opted to buy more items online.

Although the new rates are higher, some product categories are still several percentage points lower than pre-Covid affiliate commission rates.

Below is a comparison list of the new rates.

Amazon Affiliate Program

Amazon pays commissions to affiliate publishers who refer visitors that turn into sales.

Amazon is a trusted brand and this (in the past) made Amazon a good affiliate partner to work with, as a motivated referral had a higher conversion rate at Amazon than it did from being referred to a lesser known and less reliable brand.

This popularity changed in April 2020 when the pandemic changed the way consumers bought products and started buying directly from Amazon in order to comply with a lockdown and avoid venturing out of the house, to catch Covid and perish.

Due to the huge supply of consumers, the need to pay affiliates has become less urgent and Amazon has done the common sense and reduced the affiliate commission rate.

The luxury and beauty product categories saw affiliate commission rates plummet by a total of 6 percentage points, from a 10% commission rate to just 4%.

Commission rates on furniture also plummeted from 8% to 3%, while commissions on groceries fell four percentage points from 5% to 1%.

Amazon raises commission rates

An email has been sent to Amazon Associates (Amazon Affiliate Partners) announcing limited time promotional commission rates that expire on May 4, 2022.

The email states:

β€œThis is a great opportunity to take advantage of increased commissions in popular categories. The more your audience buys, the more you earn.

Promotional rates in effect until May 4.

Modest increase in Amazon affiliate commission rates

The increase in commissions is not generalized.

Amazon has increased commission rates on the following categories:

    • Shoes, handbags and accessories
    • office products
    • Kitchen
    • Residence
    • Home improvement
    • Beauty
    • Commercial and industrial supplies
    • Health and personal care

Although commission rates have increased, the new higher rates are still one to three percentage points lower than pre-Covid commission rates.

For example, Home and Home Improvement’s affiliate rates went from 3% to 5%, but that’s still three percentage points below the 8% commission rate that products in those categories previously commanded.

Commission rates for commercial and industrial supplies go from 3% to 5%, which is just below the pre-Covid 6% commission rate.

Similarly, health and personal care commission rates are increasing from 1% to 2%, but this is still significantly lower than the pre-Covid commission rate of 4.5%.
