Google Product Ratings July 2022 Algorithm Update Now Available

Google confirms that the July 2022 Product Reviews Update, the fourth in a series of updates targeting poor quality reviews, is rolling out.

The update starts rolling out today, July 27, and ends in two to three weeks.

Google made the announcement on Twitter linking to the official page for search ranking updates.

If Google’s announcement surprises you, it is. Many Google algorithm changes occur without warning, including all product rating updates to date.

However, that shouldn’t be a bad thing. With each algorithm update, there is a chance to improve the rankings, especially if the last update hurt you.

Here’s what you need to know about the July 2022 product rating algorithm change.

What is changing?

Today’s update is a refinement of Google’s product review algorithm that was introduced in March 2021.

The algorithm is designed to reward reviewers who share in-depth research rather than fine content that summarizes information you might find on a manufacturer’s website.

No new guidance is included in today’s update. Websites that publish product reviews are encouraged to continue to focus on meeting Google’s strict criteria for high-quality content.

In short, Google wants to see that you have tested and experienced the product you are reviewing firsthand.

You can make this clear to Google and your readers by including information such as quantitative metrics, pros and cons, comparisons to other products, and more.

Rewriting the same content that already exists on the web will no longer cut it. Google now prioritizes reviews that offer unique value. Even the original photos are practically obligatory.

Will I be impacted?

If you don’t post product reviews on your site, this update doesn’t affect you. This is not a major update that affects all search results.

If you sell products that customers can review on your website, this update still does not apply to you, as it is not considered a review item.

This update applies to websites that publish detailed product reviews, such as those posted on websites such as Wirecutter and CNET.

If you’re noticing product review page ranking fluctuates over the next few weeks, it’s likely due to the July 2022 Product Review Update.

If you are negatively impacted, the best way to recover is to improve the quality of your product review pages by following Google’s advice.
