Launching a new related search feature for AdSense

Google AdSense has been a great way for publishers to monetize their content through ads. Since the launch of AdSense in 2003, publishers have relied on this product offering to generate additional revenue on their websites and mobile apps.

As the nature of user experiences changes over the years, so too do Google’s product offerings.

Google announced its new feature for AdSense, Related Content Search.

If you’re one of the two million people who use AdSense, check out this new monetization opportunity.

What is Related Content Search?

Related content search is a new feature available in Google AdSense.

It serves as a contextual navigation area that displays users’ search terms related to the content they are viewing on a website.

When a user clicks on a search term, they are taken to a search results page on that publisher’s website. The search results page then displays other relevant topics, including search ads.

Benefits of Related Content Search

Enabling this feature for your website or app has many benefits, including:

  • Increased engagement on the site
  • Relevant search ads
  • Additional income
  • Better user experience

The first advantage is that it increases user engagement on your site, including:

  • Website traffic
  • Seen pages
  • Ad impressions

The second advantage is relevant search ads. Google AdSense will show ads on your website’s search results pages that match the user’s search terms.

The third advantage is that it leads additional income. You are already monetizing your content with AdSense; this new feature provides additional opportunities to serve ads to users who are already engaged on your site.

Finally, this ad unit may result in improved user experience. Since you control the appearance of related search ads, you can maintain a consistent experience for the visitor.

Related content search is a less disruptive ad unit for your website users, while still giving them the ability to click on ads if they choose.

Preservation of user privacy

The associated search function is a contextual unit, which means that the content will be displayed according to the content of the page. Additionally, ads on the search page will be targeted to the search term that a user clicked on. Google sees this as a privacy-preserving solution by not targeting based on user data.

Get started with related content search

If you are looking to add this feature to your website or app, be sure to contact your account manager to enable it. You must follow other requirements, including adhering to the Customized Search Ads Policy and the AdSense for Search (AFS) Policy.

If you don’t have a dedicated search unit for your content pages, you’ll need to create one. A complete guide can be located herebut the basic steps include:

  1. Create a custom search style in your AdSense account
  2. Decide where to place the search unit on your content pages
  3. Copy and paste the AdSense code on your site
  4. Publish all changes to your website

Related search for content reports

Reporting for this new feature is available. You will receive funnel reports for a related search block in your AdSense account.

Simply go to “Reports” >> Create Custom Report and add “Ad Format” breakdown >> Edit Metrics >> Select “Funnel Metrics”.
