Upwork suspends operations in Russia


Upwork announced that it was suspending all business operations in Russia and Belarus and taking steps to support Ukrainian partners.

The company also provides direct donations to organizations providing relief to Ukrainians.

The actions proposed by Upwork will impact both clients and freelancers in Russia and Belarus.

Upwork is implementing its phased suspension to avoid disrupting work currently under contract, so as not to harm clients or freelancers with contracts and work agreed to prior to this announcement.

Upwork suspension date in Russia and Belarus for full effect

Upwork has taken the decision to suspend all business operations in Russia and Belarus, singling out these countries because of the war they have started against Ukraine.

According to Upwork, the full effect of the suspension will come into effect on May 1, 2022. This date was chosen to allow clients and freelancers to issue final invoicing and close out currently existing contracts by this date.

The first phase of the suspension begins with stopping the creation of new businesses in Russia and Belarus.

Then, in a few days, Upwork will block the creation of new accounts and contracts by customers and freelancers based in Russia and Belarus, as well as their deletion in the Upwork search system.

Upwork has promised to work with affected clients and freelancers if they move to another country.

They also promised to consider returning to the regions once the geopolitical issues are resolved.

Upwork announced the following direct actions for the benefit of Ukraine:

  • “A $1 million donation to Direct Relief International to support the people of Ukraine.
  • Product enhancements to make it easier for Ukrainian freelancers to maintain the careers they’ve worked so hard for, whether or not they’re currently able to work.
  • Programs to make it easier for customers to maintain existing relationships and provide financial assistance to talent in Ukraine.
  • A $100,000 matching program for donations from our own team members to help with humanitarian relief in Ukraine.

Upwork joins the global community in action

Upwork is the latest organization to suspend operations in Russia and take action to support Ukraine.

He joins other freelance community organizations like Shutterstock who have also announced initiatives to directly support relief work in Ukraine and take a stand against Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
