Looking for the best time to post your posts to get the most engagement?

Finding the right time to post could help you attract more visitors, get more comments, social shares, and backlinks. It can also help you see when your audience is most active and increase your chances of going viral.

In this article, we’ll share when is the best time to post a blog post and how you can test it for your website.

When is the best time to blog and how to test it

The best time to post blog posts

If you’ve just started a new blog, you’re probably looking for ways to get more people to read your content.

While there are many ways to increase your blog traffic, you might be wondering if posting content at a specific time and date can help you attract more visitors?

Over the years, many studies have been done to find the perfect time to post a blog post. For example, one study found that 70% of people read blogs in the morning and the average best time to post blog posts for maximum traffic is Monday around 11 a.m. EST.

However, another study that analyzed millions of blog posts found that there was no difference in the number of shares or traffic by day of the week.

After analyzing all the different studies, we found that the best time to post blog posts is different for every website.

One blog may get the most traffic by posting on Monday at 11 a.m., while another may get more views by posting on Saturday night.

It all depends on your audience.

You can’t pick just one day of the week to post all of your content and expect to get more engagement based on a study. This is because most studies provide a generalized view across multiple industries.

It’s best to do your own testing and figure out which time and day works best for your website. You can test different days and times to see when you get the most traffic, social shares, and comments.

The good news is that it’s quite easy to test publishing timeouts in WordPress.

Let’s see how you can find the best publishing time for your blog posts in WordPress.

How to Test the Best Post Time in WordPress

The easiest way to find out the best time to publish blog posts in WordPress is to use MonsterInsights.

It’s the best Google Analytics plugin for WordPress, and over 3 million companies use it, including Microsoft, Bloomberg, PlayStation, and Subway.

MonsterInsights

Using MonsterInsights, you can test the best time to post with their custom dimensions feature that tracks visitor data in real time.

Let’s look at two ways to test the best time to post blog posts.

1. Setting up post time analysis

By default, Google Analytics does not track post times for your blog posts. However, you can use MonsterInsights to add this tracking using a custom dimension.

Custom dimensions track additional data such as popular authors, popular post type, and best post time in Google Analytics.

The best part about using MonsterInsights is that you don’t have to touch a single line of code to add custom dimension tracking to your website.

To note: You will need the MonsterInsights Pro Version as it includes the Custom Dimensions addon. Plus, you also get other advanced tracking and dashboard reporting features, including real-time reporting.

First, you will need to install and activate the MonsterInsights plugin. If you need help, please see our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you will be redirected to Knowledge from your WordPress dashboard, and you will see the MonsterInsights welcome screen. Go ahead and click the “Launch Wizard” button to add Google Analytics to your site.

Launch the setup wizard

For more details, please see our guide on installing Google Analytics on a WordPress website.

Then you can head to Overviews » Add-ons from your WordPress dashboard, then scroll down to the “Dimensions” addon. After that, click on the “Install” button and the addon will automatically activate.

You will see the status change from “Not Installed” to “Active”.

Activate the dimensions addon

Once the addon is active, you can go to Insights » Parameters.

Then navigate to the “Conversions” tab.

Conversion settings

Next, scroll down to the “Custom Dimensions” section.

Here you will need to click on the “Add a new custom dimension” button to start adding post time tracking.

Add a new custom dimension

After that, just select the “Published to” dimension from the drop-down menu.

Don’t forget to save your changes when you’re done.

Choose published to size

You will now need to add custom dimensions in Google Analytics.

We’ll show you how to create dimensions in older versions of Google Analytics (called Universal Analytics) and the new version of Google Analytics 4.

Add custom dimensions in Universal Analytics

First, you will need to visit the Google Analytics website and login to your account. Simply choose your website property from the menu at the top.

Choose a website property

After that navigate to the Administrator page.

Then click on the “Create definitions” and “Custom dimensions” options under the Property column.

Choose custom sizes

Then you can click the “+ New Custom Dimension” button.

Click on new custom dimension

Enter a name for your custom dimension on the next screen.

Then click on the ‘Create’ button.

Enter the dimension name

You will now see codes for your custom dimensions.

Just click the “Done” button at the bottom.

Click the done button

Your custom dimension will now be created in Google Analytics.

Just make sure the index number in Google Analytics matches the custom dimensions ID in MonsterInsights. If this is the first custom dimension you set up, they will both automatically equal “1”, so there is no need to adjust it.

Add custom dimensions in Google Analytics 4

To set up custom dimensions in Google Analytics version 4, go ahead and sign in to your account.

After that, you will need to access Configure in the menu on your left.

Go configure

Next, head over to the “Custom Definitions” option in the left menu, and click the “Create Custom Definition” button.

Create a new custom dimension

Now you will need to enter the details for your new custom dimension. Simply enter a name for the dimension and add a description for your own reference. We’ll call the new custom dimension “Best Time to Publish.”

When selecting the staff, go ahead and choose “Event” from the drop-down menu. Finally, enter an event parameter that you want the dimension to use and display in reports, such as “publication_time”.

Enter custom definition details

After entering this information, remember to click the “Save” button when you are done.

You have successfully created a custom dimension in Google Analytics to record the best time to post on your website.

Now you can go ahead and see the best posting times on your site and see when you get the most traffic.

With MonsterInsights, you can view the Dimensions report in your WordPress dashboard. Just go to Insights » Reports from your WordPress dashboard, then navigate to the “Dimensions” report.

Best Time to Publish Report

Using data from the Stats Dashboard, you can see pageviews at different dates and times. Go ahead and schedule your blog posts for the best time to publish and increase your blog traffic.

2. Monitor visitors in real time to get the best posting time

You can also view the real-time report in MonsterInsights to see how many visitors you get immediately after publishing and promoting a blog post.

Just go to Insights » Reports then navigate to the “Real Time” report to view the report.

Real-time report

Then you can monitor the report after publishing an article and share it with your readers. This will help you figure out the best time to post a blog post.

Publishing your blog posts at the right time isn’t the only way to boost your traffic. If your blog posts are properly optimized for search engines, they will continue to drive more traffic over time, long after they are published. Over time, this will bring you more traffic than posting on a certain day or at a certain time.
